Again, Spitfire Audio gives us a recent collaboration with the Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds, with whom two libraries have already produced: Ólafur Arnalds Evolutions and Ólafur Arnalds Composer Toolkit. For this latest collection, the so-called Ólafur Arnalds Chamber Evolutions, Arnalds and Spitfire have chosen a set of 16-piece camera strings.
Recorded in the legendary Lyndhurst Hall of AIR Studios and directed by Viktor Orri Árnason, the group consists of four first violins, three second violins, three violas, three cellos and three double basses. The ensemble in question was recorded with classic high-end microphones, and mixed through a Neve 88R, with Pro Tools and a quarter-inch tape and has the possibility to choose between several microphone mixes selectable by the user as a C (Close), St (Stereo), T (Tree) and A (Ambient).
The library presents a range of “fragile but warm phrases, which evolve beautifully”, which sound in the background in accordance with the Nordic minimalist aesthetic of the composer Arnalds. Using Spitfire’s Evo Grid interface, based on the extraordinary EMS VCS3 synth, to combine these evolutionary articulations, the library facilitates the creation of sophisticated and moving textures from a simple series of notes. Ólafur Arnalds Chamber Evolutions also presents two new features; Waves, where the notes follow a dynamic arc similar to a wave, which appears out of nowhere, rises to a swell and then goes out again. And Feathering, allows to interpret different chords and listen to the details made by the musicians.
The possibility of creation goes further in the case of this new library, thanks to the ability to generate random evolutions, which allows unexpected results. The recording of a series of very long notes that change or mutate over time across the range of the keyboard produces different evolutions.
Ólafur Arnalds Chamber Evolutions has more than 15,000 samples. Requires Mac OS X 10.10, 10.11 or Mac OS X 10.12 (latest update) Intel Core 2 Duo. And the requirements for PC are; Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10 (latest Service Pack, 32/64-bit) Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 X2.
